Joseph Battaglia

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Native Staten Islander Joseph Battaglia, 95, of South Beach, a retired union carpenter and Army veteran who loved to dance, died Tuesday in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton.

Born in South Beach, he remained in that community before moving to the Staten Island Care Center, New Brighton, five weeks ago.

Mr. Battaglia was a Local 20 carpenter in Staten Island and Manhattan. He also owned a business, J & G Dry Wall, South Beach, for 20 years.

In his leisure hours, he enjoyed spending time in the Robins Social Club, South Beach, where he was a member.

Mr. Battaglia also delighted in dancing at area nightclubs and did so until he was 92.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He attended Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach.

His wife of 25 years, the former Amelia Altadonna, died in 1981.

Surviving are a stepson, Joseph Del Bove; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Weigl; seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
