It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph DePersia, whose warmth, kindness, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Whether through his thoughtful words, humorous stories, or welcoming presence, Joe had a remarkable ability to make people feel valued and appreciated.
Joe was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Joseph and Mary DePersia and was raised in the Midwood neighborhood alongside his sisters, Mary Ellen and Linda. He graduated from Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in 1970 and went on to earn a degree in Social Sciences from Hunter College in 1974.
In 1980, Joe married the love of his life, Joanne D’Arco. Their marriage of 46 years was marked by unwavering devotion, partnership, and love. Together, they raised two sons, Michael and Alex.
Joe began his career at WNYE-TV/FM at just 17 years old. Through hard work and dedication, he rose to become Program and Production Manager, a position he held until 2000. He then served as Director of Media Services for the New York City Board of Education from 2000 until his retirement in 2007.
Even after retirement, Joe remained active in the field he loved, providing media and video conferencing services. He also rekindled a lifelong passion for music, performing and creating with the same enthusiasm and creativity that defined every chapter of his life. This passion led him to form Cat and the Kingsnake, a band made up of both longtime and newfound friends. Their performances of beloved songs from the 1960s and 1970s brought joy to audiences throughout Staten Island.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne; his sons, Alex and his wife Jenna, and Michael and his wife Josefine; his sisters, Mary Ellen and Linda; and his cherished grandchildren, Leo and Maija. He also leaves behind many in-laws, nieces, nephews, dear friends, and all those whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Joe will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and deep love for his family, friends, music, and community. He will be profoundly missed.
