

Born in St. Louis, Mr. Matons lived in Spain until he moved to Manhattan at the age of 10. In 1980, he moved to New Dorp and settled in Dongan Hills in 2012.
Mr. Matons served in the U.S. Coast Guard until he was honorably discharged as a disabled veteran in 1943. He was then a Merchant Mariner.
He later worked as an inspector for the U.S. Postal Service for 40 years, retiring in 1992.
He is remembered for his healthy appetite and love of eating. He also enjoyed walking and traveling.
His wife of more than 50 years, Mary Alice, died in 1997. His stepson, William O'Connel, died in 1996.
Surviving are his son, Joseph Jr.; a sister, Juanita Jaworski; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday from the Virginia Funeral Home, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
