Born in Brooklyn, his moved with family to Lista, Norway, as a child. When the Nazis invaded Norway in 1940, they returned to Brooklyn.
Mr. Nordgaard served in the U.S. Navy for three years, and was stationed in the South Pacific.
He joined the NYPD in 1952, assigned to the Bay Ridge, Brooklyn precinct. He retired in 1973.
Mr. Nordgaard built his home in Great Kills in 1957.
He was a founding member of the Great Kills Swim Club and a member of Nansen Lodge, Sons of Norway, Travis.
He enjoyed socializing with friends and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed dancing, singing and travel.
Mr. Nordgaard was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Great Kills.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Jean; his sons, Jon, Joseph and James; his daughter, Susan Giberson, and nine grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills. Arrangements include cremation.
