Josephine R. Greco, former School Secretary for the New York City Board of Education, passed away peacefully at home on April 10, 2018. Born Josephine R. Craparotta in West New York, NJ, she was brought as an infant to Grasmere in 1922. She was raised on Parkinson Avenue in the home built by her family, and attended New Dorp HS, graduating in 1939. She then attended Drakes Business School in Manhattan, and later in life she attended Staten Island Community College. Married in 1947 to Joseph P. Greco, she had three children.
She started her working career at Clarkson and Ford in Manhattan where she worked as a secretary for eight years. She then worked at the Staten Island Garden Center on Hylan Blvd as a bookkeeper, followed by becoming a School Secretary in 1965. She worked on Staten Island at P.S. 19, P.S. 44 and lastly P.S. 11 in Dongan Hills, retiring in 1979.
Mrs. Greco was a member of St. Christopher’s Parish in Grant City, and a member of St. Christopher’s Socialites, the AARP of Dongan Hills, the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, and the Ladies Guild of St. Charles Seminary. She was an avid reader and loved to dance. She had great love for her family and was a model of quiet strength and peace to them all.
Mrs. Greco was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph P. Greco in 1991. She is survived by her children, Carol Obler; Ginger Zoda (Bill); and Joseph L. Greco, her grandchildren Marvin Obler (Jan); Michele Cynowicz (Gabe); Billy Zoda; and Christine Egizi (Tom), her great grandchildren Gage; Ariel; Zachery; Quinn; and Ava, and by many loving nieces and nephews.
