Dear Leo,

I still remember you.
I was working as manager in a chocolate shop, and in an abusive relationship with my boss. I prided myself on excellent customer service, at all times.

When I learned of your passing I broke down and had to leave.
I ran home and sobbed into a pillow.

And since then—13 years now—I’ve written of you, and spoken your name in blessing.  I include you in my art.  I remember you, Leo.

May you Rest in Peace, and in Power.  Blessings.

Merry Christmas in Heaven. You were always so kind, sincere and generous to everyone that you met. I know that you are a very special angel. You are in my thoughts and in my heart all of the time. My love for you is eternal.

Leo,
I only knew of you before you left us.  In your absence, I have learned so much about you--how deeply you were loved, how deeply you loved.  You were a voice in the dark for so many.  You led so many to answers, to information, to a place where they could be loved no matter what.  What a beautiful soul you are.  I have learned so very much from you in your absence.  The beauty of your mark on this Earth is that even now that you are gone, your ripple continues to move outward touching those you never knew in your life.  I will share your story to anyone who will listen.  Your life was so big.  Your heart and soul even bigger.  Thank you for being here, even for such a short time.  You changed me in ways you could have never foreseen.  I hope you have found peace in a place you can be who you were always meant to be. Dear Phyllis and Sean,
     I came home from a two week vacation and heard the devastating news about your lovely Laura.  My heart breaks for you both in having to endure this crushing loss.  She grew up to be such a wonderful young woman with everything to live for.  I can't imagine your pain.  
     She was my student for an entire year as a sophomore in my English class.  I remember her pretty open face, that engaging smile, those doe eyes, the thick, long, dark hair.  She was an excellent student and was loved by all.  Even after that year, I so enjoyed seeing and hearing her play the trumpet in the jazz band.  I think she was very proud to be the only female trumpeter at the time.
      It was a joy to see her and David Mathews walking to class together, in friendship, chatting and laughing, carrying their instruments.  She was always surrounded by friends, the many who loved her.
      I am so very sad for you both and you have my deepest sympathy.  We all suffer from this profound loss.  She made a lasting impact on everyone whose life she touched.  I hope you will eventually find solace in all your happy memories of her.  May she rest in peace.

Leo, you changed my life.

Thank you for everything.

Yesterday afternoon I learned of Laura's passing, a dear friend of mine who I regarded as quite special.  I first met her on the steps of Sacred Heart Church when she was a sophomore in high school.  Of course, her beautiful smile and flowing lengths of hair caught my eye immediately.  Looking for an ‘excuse' to meet her, I drew one up, it worked, and we met.  We enjoyed numerous outings to local restaurants, and one that made it into the SI Advance, when we got caught in a blackout, driving around only to discover our favorite pizzeria, Pal Joey's locked up, the Forest Ave. Thai house shut, and the cashier for Family Health Foods standing at the door giving us the “X” sign.  Perhaps my fondest memory of Laura is an ongoing one, yes, in the present tense, and that being the many, many, in-depth e-mail communications we shared over the past few years.  When she moved off of SI, we both agreed to set a schedule to keep in touch, and we did.  Whatever topic we discussed, she always approached it with sincerity and open-mindedness.  Indeed, I often remarked to myself that Laura was the most rational, mature person I knew.  A few years ago, she asked me if I'd be willing to discuss some personal matters she was experiencing, and if I would continue to think of her in the same way.  I assured her that nothing would change our friendship, and afterwards we became even closer, sharing inner feelings about very personal things.  This was a real friend, the kind you only hear about in storybooks.  Her compassion extended beyond our mutual love for animals, whereas I was very opinionated, Laura was not quick to judge, but instead offered possible causes for every effect, and done so with a caring feeling.  Our last e-mail exchange, just a few weeks ago, continued this tradition as she spoke of her father and her encounter with the “light in the hallway”.  A big topic that we shared thoughts on over the years was spirituality.  If you took all the e-mails and conversations we had on this subject alone, a small novel could be put together.  She had so many questions and wanted to know so many answers, that is the best way I can describe it.  She shared her feelings with me on the Mass, how she felt about the homilies, and wanted to study about Christ more because she wanted to make a better connection in order for her to better relate to him, that is how she described it.  So, our relays were very in-depth and we both agreed that ultimately, despite critique from people over what's right and what's wrong, what really counted was the “heart”.  Laura had a very warm, caring and actively compassionate heart.  A few e-mails ago, we agreed to keep in touch, she of course living in Brooklyn, me in Staten Island.  Yesterday I visited Laura at her gravesite, and in continuing the fondest memory I spoke of, yes, in the present tense, I told her the latest on my cats, and spoke of some other things.  I asked her to keep in touch in some way, because I don't want to ever lose her.  I don't want to cease our friendship because of this physical limitation called death, rather, because of her love and good-spiritedness I know firmly that in her heart she would not want to cease either, and I look forward to keeping her actively apparent in my life. I was shocked to hear about Laura's passing.  We were in a few classes together at New Paltz and I had the opportunity of working with her as a SLP at Blue Feather this past year. Laura was one of the most selfless people I have ever met.  Anytime I had a question or needed help with a client, she was the first one there with insightful advice.  Laura, you will be incredibly missed.  My heart goes out to her family and loved ones.  Heaven gained an angel when she walked through.

It's impossible to recall fond memories of growing up without Laura in them. She was always there, side by side, ever since we were children. College put many miles in between us, but she was always in my thoughts. My prayers are with Phyllis and Sean during this time. Laura, you are missed....

I am so heartbroken to hear of Laura's passing. My deepest sympathies for your loss. Having gone though Jr. High and High School with Laura, I know that she had a huge impact on my life even though we were never close friends. She was always fun to work and have class with. She was so witty  and bright! She was the final reason I decided to be, and still am, a vegetarian. I still have some of her 6th grade Animal Rights art on my wall. My favorite story was when she helped stop a girl trying to bully me. I hadn't even realized she was standing behind me until the bully started telling her to leave, but she refused to go. We weren't close friends, but she backed me up because she felt it was right to do. It was for those, and so many other reasons, that I always admired Laura, and always will. I tell those stories often and I hope they inspire others, just as she was so inspiring. She had a bright personality that would light up the atmosphere of the classroom. I feel that the world is darker without her in it.

I am devastated to hear Laura's passing. It was just yesterday that we were facebook messaging about SLP topics. She was a treasured friend and colleague. I met Laura in SUNY-New Paltz, in "old man Brooks'" class as she used to refer to our ancient professor. We were both Communication Disorders majors. She was always a friendly face, a breath of fresh air and a dose of reality in our fast-paced, competitive field of study. We went separate ways for grad school but we still kept in touch. Laura was the kind of person who would go out of her way to help a friend in need. When she knew I needed some help getting myself started as a new clinician, she took it upon herself to create a disc of therapy materials and snail mail it to me. I have so many fond memories of Laura- both social and academic. I will always remember the kind, generous and good-natured person she was. She will be missed. My heart and prayers go out to Mary Catherine and Laura's family.

Laura, news of your passing was really hard for me. I wish I could have been there to be near friends and say my goodbyes. We spent from 4th-12th grade in band with many of the same faces. It was a journey that we all took together and no one can ever take that away. I know you've had such a positive impact on so many people's lives and it's clear through all the wonderful things people have to say about you. I don't think you ever had a mean bone in you and the angels are lucky to have you now. Rest in peace, and may you finally find the happiness you deserve <3

My deepest condolences to MC and the O'Hanlon family. It seems unreal that I saw Leo just last week, always a pleasure to run into. When I think of Leo the first word that comes to mind is VIBRANT. That smile! So genuine and gentle. May you all take care of one another in this time of inconceivable grief. Much love and light. x

I had the privilege of working with Laura at Brooklyn Blue Feather Elementary. She was kind, humble, and compassionate. I was just sitting and talking with her last Thursday. I remember her smiling- she always had a smile on her face. I will never forget you Laura and the amazing influence you had on the students you serviced. My condolences to the family.

i was so stunned to hear the news of Laura's passing. I realized the last moment she came to my aid to help me with a social story I wanted to teach-on how to get my students to ask for help. And the irony is that no matter what was asked of her-she was always willing to help. It saddens me greatly that I will no longer be able to ask her for advice-but in the end I was left with a symbol of what she meant to me in a unique way that will never be forgotten! May you rest in peace....

Laura was truly one of a kind. When I think of her, immediately what comes to mind is her unmatched generosity to all, and her absolute love for animals. A person like Laura will never be forgotten.

I was devastated to hear that Leo was gone. Leo had a more profound impact on my life than even she could have known. I had just been thinking about her a couple weeks ago and ran into her and MC in the city soon after. It's so hard to believe I will never see her again. She was probably the kindest, gentlest, funniest person I ever had the pleasure of meeting. She will be sorely missed.

Dear Laura,

It's with great sadness I am writing on this page. I met you in high school and was fortunate to see you everyday for four years. Running into you while in college and then again in graduate school was always a pleasure. I particularly enjoyed that you were going for speech therapy and I was going for occupational therapy; we were part of the team! I remember you being kind and intelligent, my buddy in the very last row of chemistry class. There were two empty rows between us and the rest of the class (this teacher will remain unnamed for privacy). Needless to say, there were a lot of glances towards each other in confusion, "Why are we so far away from the rest of the class?!" I am so happy I got to spend that time with you and feel blessed to have known such a kind spirit. These pictures that are being posted on facebook remind me of what a classic, natural beauty you were. You are so loved and you will never be forgotten. My condolences to your family and loved ones. May you rest in peace.

Laura, i am so sadden by your loss! your infectious smile is what I am going to be missing the most at work!  I am at a loss for words! You will be greatly missed, especially the love and dedication you gave to those children!! BBF will never be the same!! Another Angel taken from us way too soon!

This breaks my heart. Such an incredible, warm, generous, sweet, kind, compassionate, amazing person. I will miss you so much. This is so heartbreaking to so many people. My thoughts and love go out to family and friends.

I had the pleasure of watching Laura work with students of all levels of communicative abilities at Brooklyn Blue Feather Elementary. She always showed the  utmost respect, compassion and kindness to kids and coworkers. A true speech therapist. She was a gem.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Laura. She was amazingly talented and beautiful and had a heart of gold. I was lucky enough to have known and been friends with her in High School. CHS class of 2003.. once a warrior always a warrior!! My heart goes out to those you left behind and may they all find peace and serenity. You will certainly be missed by many Laura!
