Born in Newton, N.J., he moved with family to Stapleton as a boy and grew up there.
Mr. Dailey graduated from Curtis High School, where he was captain of the football team.
He caught the eye of Helen Gallagher when the two were students at PS 14, and their love affair started then and there, family said. They were married in 1954 and lived in Stapleton until 1965, when they settled in Fort Wadsworth.

He worked as a butcher in the Port Richmond area for more than 30 years.
Mr. Dailey enjoyed visits to Atlantic City and spending time with his family.
Helen, his wife of 55 years, died in 2009.
Surviving are his sons, Richard, Joseph and Louis Jr.; his daughter, Debra Post, and four grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
