Former volunteer school librarian who loved to read
Peggy Garland, 94, formerly Margaret Carney, a 63-year resident of Great Kills, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 30, 2019.
Born in Elmhurst, Queens, the daughter of two Irish immigrants, she graduated from Bishop McDonnell High School in 1943. Peggy worked for the New York Life Insurance Company and was one of the original tenants in Stuyvesant Town before moving to Great Kills in 1956.
Peggy was a parishioner of St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills, where she was a former president of the St. Clare's Mother Club, Altar Rosary Society, a 25-year volunteer in the school library, Craft Group and an officer in the Monsignor Farrell High School Mothers' Club. She was also a charter member of the Great Kills Swim Club.
Surviving are her four children (and their spouses): Kathleen, Michael (Peggy), John (Monica) and Thomas Jr. (Peggy), and seven grandchildren. Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Garland, in 2008. Special thanks to St. Clare's parish team and her in-house care team who became part of the family.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, June 5, from the Casey-McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with an afternoon viewing from 2 to 4 p.m. and an evening viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass will be offered on Thursday, June 6, at 9:45 a.m. at Saint Clare's Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
