Passed away on March 22, 2012

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Marie R. Ames, 79, of Castleton Corners, a lifelong Staten Islander who enjoyed crocheting for her family, especially the babies, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.

Born Marie R. Caterina in Great Kills, she graduated from New Dorp High School, where she was a cheerleader.

After she and John Ames wed, the couple moved to New Brighton. They settled in Castleton Corners in 1960.

Mrs. Ames worked for American Express in Manhattan before leaving to raise a family. After her children were older, she returned to work as a cook at the Manor Sweet Shop in Castleton Corners. She retired in 1995.

She enjoyed going on cruises, especially to Bermuda, where she and her husband traveled several times.

She also enjoyed visits to Atlantic City and her twice-weekly card games with friends from her neighborhood.

Mrs. Ames loved to crochet blankets and other items for her family. She delighted in time spent with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

“She was always at her happiest when she was spending time with her family and friends, she really enjoyed that the most,” said her daughter, Donna Leyko.

Mrs. Ames was a parishioner of St. Teresa’s R.C. Church, Castleton Corners.

John, her husband of 50 years, died in 2004.

Along with her daughter, surviving are her son, John; her brothers, Peter and Anthony Caterina; her sister, Rose Capriccioso; two grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa’s Church. Arrangements include cremation.
