Happy birthday, Marie!

This time of year has become incredibly difficult without my twin, but it seems to get a little bit easier with each passing year.

Here is a picture of you taking a picture of me in the gym at P.S. 163. One of my biggest regrets is that I never told you how ridiculously proud I am of you for pursuing photography for your entire life. You inspire me every single day to hold my head up high and take on whatever life throws at me. 

If only you knew the impact that you had on me!

I once asked you why Philadelphia? You replied that is where my friends are! You lived for your friends. You’d gotten so much inspiration from them. You were an angel loaned from God.  Your friends will always remember you.  You will always be in the hearts of the people you touched. RIP. 

Your energy, spirit, personality, your creative drive, your infectious smile occupied such a large part of our lives that for time to progress forward without you feels impossible. 

Losing you feels like I’m losing part of myself. The time we spent together as partners shaped me into the person I am today. I wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for those days we spent as 18-20 yo kids. You were such a loving, challenging and inspiring partner. I often think about those late nights we would spend in the studio — or walking the streets of the UWS bundled up in our winter coats — or sweating like dogs in shorts and a tank. No matter what we talked about or how late it got, it felt like I was bathed in the glow of a celestial object when I was with you. That smile of yours the brightest object in the know universe. Every minute was a priceless treasure to me— a treasure I will continue to carry with me through the rest of my life. 

Even though we’ve grown further apart in the intervening years, It just breaks my heart to be the only one that shares these memories now. I will mourn your loss and like many of your friends and family live with the pain of your absence for the rest of our days. But I will never forget the time we spent together. Rest In peace my dear Marie.

We went to a festival called Sustain Release in 2019 and we shared a tent for three nights and you could hear the bass bumping almost all night with a little break in the morning so the ravers can sleep. I remember the silence being interrupted by the loudest snores I’ve heard and found out it was coming from Marie. I think that serves as a metaphor for how even though she made jokes about her height frequently , she still commanded the largest presence in the room with her awesome personality and style.
