Mario Affortunato

Mario Affortunato passed away on Sunday, January 8th, 2023 at NY Presbyterian Hospital. Originally from Calabria, Italy, from the town of Cassano all'Ionio, Mario was born to Luigi and Stella Affortunato. He came to the United States at the age of twenty four. After being in the United States for a short time, he was called into service in Vietnam in the Army Corps of Engineers. After his service, he met his wife Tina at Cresthaven Country Club in Queens, NY. They married shortly afterward in Brooklyn, NY in 1975. They had their daughter Claire in 1976 and then their son Louis in 1984. The family then moved to Staten Island, NY in 1986.

Mario worked for over forty years for the New York State Department of Transportation in the field of Civil Engineering. He obtained his Associates Degree from the New York Institute of Technology. He enjoyed going to the movies on weekends as well as watching soccer, and sitting by the beach on nice days. Mario was also an accordion player in his youth and would play on the balcony of his house in his home town.

He is survived by his wife, his two children, and his three grandchildren, Christopher, Stephen, and Aubrey.

A visitation for Mario will be held Friday, January 13, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10308. A funeral service will occur Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 9:45 AM at St Clares Church, 110 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10308. A committal service will occur Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Moravian Cemetery, 2205 Richmond Road, Staten Island, NY 10306.
