86 years old
Born in Brooklyn and moved to Staten Island in 1964.
Mary was a self educated scholar and loved history and the King’s English. Although Mary had to quit school when she was 14 years old to help support her family of 10, she was adamant about proper posture, language and etiquette.
She loved musicals, opera, mystery novels and preferred a bloody steak over dessert. Mary could chop wood with the men and then be very glamorous, she could rock the stiletto.
Mary married Henry Kittel at 18 and had her first child at 19 years old. Four more children followed after that, 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Mary was a loving and generous mother and would sacrifice anything for her children.
Mary worked as a corrections officer for 3 years before she became an NYPD officer, where she worked in the 14th, 77th and 120 precincts.
Mary retired from the NYPD after she was hurt in the line of duty while working under cover with the SENIOR CITIZENS ROBBERY UNIT in the 120 precinct.
After her retirement, Mary devoted herself to her husband, children and grandchildren.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Kittel, and her son, Glenn Kittel.
Mary is survived by her sons, Douglas and Martin, by her daughter-in- law, Donna Kittel, and her daughters, Lesley and Elayne.
Mary is also survived by her grandchildren, Ian Pickett, Caleb Kittel, Travis Pickett, Gretchen Kittel, Zara Kittel, Christian Kittel, Erik Andersen, Russell Kittel, Savanna Kittel, and Jake Kittel and by her great-grandchildren, Serena Pickett, Anjali Pickett, Sophia Pickett, Vaya Kittel, Anderson Purpora and Elena Pickett.
There are many nieces and nephews that she adored, in particular Carolyn Kittel and Suzanne Derosa (her sunshine).
