

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Mary Magdaline Smith, 89, of St. George, a retired beautician and Willowbrook Developmental Center employee who was very active in Raritan Temple, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World, died Wednesday in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton.
Born Mary Magdaline Emerson in Meridian, Miss., she graduated from Harris High School there.
After moving to Meiers Corners, she graduated from the Essie Mae School of Beauty, Elizabeth, N.J.
She had lived in St. George for about 25 years.
Ms. Smith worked as a licensed beautician at Willowbrook Developmental Center for 25 years. She retired in 1971.
She was an active member of Raritan Temple, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World on the Island. She had held all offices including treasurer until her health prevented that. And she was an active member and officer of the New York State Daughters of Elks, holding the office of secretary and later chairman of the Arts and Crafts Department. She was honored as a Past Grand Daughter Ruler of the Anniversary and Flower Department when she was Grand Assistant Directress.
Ms. Smith loved to crochet and enjoyed making lap throws and afghans for nursing home residents. She also was fond of doing the flowers at the Elks' annual Chinese auction.
She had traveled extensively worldwide, journeying to 19 countries. She also loved going on cruises and driving herself across the United States.
Ms. Smith was a member of First Church of God in Christ, West Brighton.
She had no children of her own but was very close to her nephews, Monty Jr. and Kenneth Taylor and niece Vicky Taylor-Williams.
Surviving is her companion of 34 years, Clarence Marsh.
The funeral service will be Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills. Arrangements include cremation.
