Mary Teresa "Tess" Cameron

August 19, 1932June 27, 2020

Mary Teresa Cameron (nee Durkan), affectionately known as Tess, of Great Kills, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.

Tess was born and raised in Balla, County Mayo, Ireland, and was one of seven children. She came to America at the age of eighteen and met the love of her life, John Cameron, also a native of County Mayo, at a dance in New York City. They were happily married for 62 years before John was called home to God in 2017. Tess was blessed with seven loving children: Brendan, John, Cathy, Eileen, Rich, Nancy, and Maureen. She was the proud Nana of seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was a faithful parishioner of St. Clare’s Church and a member of the Mayo Society of New York. One of Tess’ proudest moments was being voted Mayo Woman of the Year in 2005. Tess adored her family and friends and cherished the time she spent with them. She enjoyed nothing more than inviting them for a cup of tea and a slice of her famous Irish soda bread.

She is predeceased by her husband John, grandson John Francis, brothers John, Jimmy, Patrick, and Bob, and sister Bridget.

In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her sister, Sarah, her sisters-in-law Noreen, Bernie, Nellie, Mary, Angela, and Catherine, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Her family will miss her dearly but are comforted knowing that John and Tess are together again.

Family and friends may call Tuesday, June 30th, from 4 -7 pm at Casey McCallum-Rice Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 1st at 10 am at the Church of St. Clare, 110 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY. Interment immediately following at Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.

Tess was an active volunteer in all of her children’s activities and was an avid supporter of Catholic education. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Joseph Hill Academy or Monsignor Farrell High School in her name.

My sincere condolences to the Cameron family on the passing of Tess RIP. She was a very valued member of her Ballinagran family and a fabulous person. John & Tess were so welcoming, supportive, generous & caring to all of us and they raised a wonderful family. They kept the Mayo flag flying high in the US & Tess served so graciously as Mayo Lady in 2005. We always looked forward to their visits home & I will miss our weekly Sunday night phone calls which we both enjoyed for many years. Rest peacefully in your heavenly home dear Tess, with your beloved husband John.

Aunt Tess was always supportive of me in everything I did and was always calling me for my birthday in December. I mostly remember the good times as a kid going to their house in Staten Island and playing in the basement with all the cousins, while the big card games were going on upstairs. I think they made more noise upstairs than we did downstairs. We will miss you Aunt Tess.
