MaryEllen Theresa Smith passed away peacefully on June 27, 2022. She was a registered nurse for 40 years working in a variety of medical settings and numerous hospitals in the Metropolitan area. A graduate of St. Vincent's Nursing School, MaryEllen worked in several hospitals on Staten Island in a supervisory role. Her final nursing position before retiring was at the Arthur Kill Correctional facility. In 2001, MaryEllen was featured on the cover of Irish America magazine as one of their Top 100 Irish Americans because of her work as a parish nurse for St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan. She was also recognized for this award because of her outstanding nursing skills and friendly, helpful relationship with the parishioners. She was an avid swimmer and swam every day, despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis thirty years ago. She also loved to walk and would walk around Silver Lake park daily. Photography became a hobby as well with sunsets being her specialty. MaryEllen was a very active parishioner at Our Lady of Good Council church as a daily communicant and was very well known throughout the parish for her charitable works. She was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to the Ocean Breeze area of Staten Island after graduating from nursing school. She is predeceased by her parents, Mary and James Smith. James was a former NYC police detective and Mary was an army nurse with the rank of lieutenant in World War II. She is also predeceased by her brother Kevin and her nephew Kevin. She is survived by her loving partner of 34 years, Dorothy Tuohy. She is also survived by brothers James and William, nieces Kristi, Jenna and Eileen and great niece Miranda as well as great nephews John, Rein and Stephen. MaryEllen also adored her three cats, Prince, Lucy and Baby. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 7-9pm and Thursday from 3-5 & 7-9pm at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Avenue, Staten Island. Funeral Mass will be Friday 10:00am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 10 Austin Place, Staten Island.
