Born on August 17, 1949, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Michael was the son of the late Jerome and Marie Cusmano. He was lovingly raised by his grandmother, Rose Cortazzi, and shared a special bond with his family throughout his life.
Michael proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Specialist Fourth Class and receiving the Bronze Star in recognition of his service. He remained devoted to his fellow veterans as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sergeant Michael Labetti Post, on Staten Island.
Throughout his career, Michael worked as a professional driver for Romantique Limousines and A Very Special Place, a nonprofit organization supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Among his most memorable professional experiences was having the opportunity to chauffeur Dolly Parton and members of the legendary band The Eagles.
Michael was a man who never missed an opportunity to make someone laugh. Blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and an easygoing personality, he had a remarkable ability to put people at ease. His friendliness and quick wit drew people to him, and he was always ready with a joke or a smile.
A man of many interests, Michael enjoyed archery, hunting, fishing, scuba diving, watching movies, and listening to music, particularly Led Zeppelin. He also had a tremendous love for animals and could often be found feeding the neighborhood squirrels, birds, and cats each day after work.
Above all, Michael cherished his family, particularly the time they spent together during the holidays. His presence brought warmth, laughter, and joy to family gatherings, and those occasions will never quite be the same without him.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Jerome and Marie Cusmano, and his brother, Stephen Cusmano. He is survived by his beloved sister, Dolores Cusmano, with whom he shared an especially close relationship. He will also be fondly remembered by his cousins, Dorothy DeToy and Carol Ann Woods, along with his extended family and many friends.
Michael will be remembered for his service to his country, his love of family and animals, his kindness, and, perhaps most of all, the laughter he brought into the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Avenue, Staten Island, New York.
Following the service, Michael will be laid to rest with military honors at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, Pennsylvania, with the committal service scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial contributions to a veterans organization of the donor's choice in honor of Michael's military service and lifelong commitment to his fellow veterans.
