STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Mildred Vollmer, 96, of Rossville, a retired school cook who will be remembered as the loving matriarch of three generations, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.
Born and raised Mildred Lanahan in Tompkinsville, she moved to Rossville in the early 1970s.
She worked for 25 years at the Board of Education as a school cook.
Mrs. Vollmer was fond of travel and especially enjoyed trips to Ireland, cruises with her family and road trips. She also enjoyed playing bingo and visiting casinos.
A loving grandmother, she enjoyed time spent with her family. She cherished seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Vollmer attended St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Tottenville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1959, and by her daughter, Eileen Fortunato, in 2008.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Eltingville. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood. Arrangements are being handled by the Casey McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills.
