

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Richard J. Martino, 82, of Meiers Corners, a retired communications equipment installer who was dedicated to his faith and family, died Wednesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born in Rosebank, he graduated from McKee High School.
He settled in Meiers Corners 50 years ago.
Mr. Martino worked for 35 years for AT&T in Manhattan as a central office equipment installer. He retired from the company after 37 years of service, and worked part-time as part of a sanitation crew in the Forest Avenue Shopper's Town, Port Richmond.
Finally, his creative side was brought out when he took a part-time job with a family florist, "Flowers by Us," Graniteville, creating silk flower bouquets at home for weddings and other occasions.
A man of very strong faith, he dedicated his time to volunteering for pro-life causes. He was a longtime member and past vice president of the Staten Island Right to Life Committee.
Mr. Martino was a founder, director and volunteer for more than 30 years at the Needy Mother's Support Program, based at the Society of St. Paul in Meiers Corners, which provides baby supplies and services to mothers in need.
He also spent many years organizing the True Vine Christian Coffee House and Fellowship.
He had a green thumb and loved gardening. He also enjoyed good food, shooting pool, dancing with his wife and spending time with his family.
Known as "Pops," he was a doting grandfather and treasured his grandchildren.
He attended Son-Rise Faith Church, Bulls Head.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. A private first class with the U.S. Army Signal Corps, he was stationed stateside and in Japan. He was member of the Granito-Smith American Legion Post, New Brighton.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Catherine Magdalen; his sons, Richard, David and Steven; his daughters, Susan Luberto, Francine Antonucci and Mary Barlotta; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
