

Robert P. Lonergan (Bob) passed away on Friday April 24, 2026 in Staten Island Hospital in NY. Bob had been a resident at Carmel Richmond Health and Rehabilitation Center in Staten Island NY for several years prior to his hospitalization, and was well cared for by the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, and staff.
Bob was born in a military hospital in Governors Island NY on 9/29/43 to parents Amelia Hegarty Lonergan and John Lonergan, and was the eldest of four children. Bob grew up in Brooklyn NY and also lived in Germany for five years when his dad was stationed there while in the US Army.
Bob was a retiree of the NYC Transit Police Department, and had been promoted to the status of detective, and later to President of the Detective’s Endowment Association where he served for several years.
Bob was very athletic, and he ran the NYC 26 mile marathon for several years to raise money for Special Olympics. Bob also worked tirelessly to raise money for Tunnels to Towers, after his heroic efforts to save lives on 911.
Bob was predeceased by his wife Anne Halpin Lonergan and his brother Douglas Lonergan, and he is survived by his son David Lonergan and his sisters Patricia Loftus and Linda Mackin, as well as multiple nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visitation will be held at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314, US, on May 1, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am.
A Memorial Mass will take place at St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 1634 Victory Blvd, New York, NY 10314, US, on May 1, 2026, from 10:45 am to 11:45 am.
Burial of Ashes will follow at St John of God Cemetery, 118 Wheeler Rd, Central Islip, NY 11722, US, on May 1, 2026, from 1:45 pm to 2:00 pm.
