I had Mr. Mathews for History as well.  He was kind and caring and made an real impact as he went through life touching the lives of each of his students.  He was genuine and dedicated to his profession and first of all, to the students who were blessed to enter his classroom and have him for a teacher.  I will always remember him and my thoughts and prayers are with all his family and friends and all the students will miss him, myself included.

Rest in Peace Mr. Mathews.  Heaven holds a special place for you.

My condolence in learning of the passing of Bob.I remember our meeting in Korea in 1952,he in the Army and I a Marine. Semper Fi.

Mr. Mathews was a wonderful man and teacher.  He helped many of us shape ourselves into young men.  He  was the heart and soul of  PRHS.

Rob was a kind and caring man. My memories of him are one of kindness
and compassion. I remember when my uncle, mother and I waited for
the service to begin at my grandmother's funeral and in walks Rob and Aunt
Amelia.  It was so comforting to have them with us. Rest in peace.

Mr. Mathews was my history teacher and I worked for him in the Grade Advisor Office. I have wonderful memories of both. He lived well and I am happy he is at peace.

A more gentle spirit I have yet to meet. When he spoke you listened.  A truly gifted man doing what he was meant to do.

Mr. Mathews was synonymous with PRHS. When I think back to my high school days and the activities we participated in, almost every one  involved Bob Mathews! He gave us his all and continued giving and caring right through to our 50th class reunion two months ago. My condolences to his family. His passing leaves a void that will never be filled.

Bob Matthews was a true gentleman and scholar.  He loved his profession, his church and this community.  May he rest in peach.

Mr.Mr Matthews was an unbelievable coach mentor and friend...He was such as a great role model and cared so much for all his students..I played basketball from 1975-1978 and Mr Matthews did EVERYTHING too make sure I excelled and got my high school diploma and I did and I thank HIM for that...RIP my mentor

I am deeply saddened to learn of Mr. Mathews passing. He was the finest man I've ever known, always caring so much about his students. Playing basketball for him was the highlight of my high school career at Port Richmond. He was always compassionate towards his players, and to everyone who knew him. Mr. Mathews was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He will be missed.

Great memories at Port Richmond HS with Mr. Mathews -- especially the twins photo in 1981 and trips to Pan Am building with the glee club.  Thanks for the memories.  RIP, Mr. Mathews...from an alumnus of 1985.

I will always remember after gym class him at the exit door talking with the kids. If I heard "when the going gets tough the tough get going" once I heard it a hundred times and so did my kids hear it from me as they were growing up.

Sad to learn about the passing of Bob Mathews one of the nicest persons to work with at PRHS. I went on school trips with him as one of the chaperones and he was so nice and fun to be with.  PRHS has lost one of its best teachers with a good heart and soul.  I just wrote out his Christmas card and know that he is in the hands of Our Lord to celebrate Christmas with the new born Babe. I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Mathews passing.  He was such a genuinely nice guy and an interegral part of Port Ruchmond High School.  I will always fondly remember how he would pull over on his way to school and and give those of us who we're waiting for the bus on Richmond Avenue.  I so appreciated that kind gesture particularly on those cold winter mornings when the R4 was running sporadically as it often did in the 1970s.  Rest in peace Mr. Mathews.  You will always be part of my wonderful High School memories.

Really sorry to hear about his passing. He was always so kind to all the kids around him, whether you were one of the athletes or a student that he never met before.  He was truly a caring individual and my friends and I spent time with him going to Knick games and other sporting events. He was one of those people who had PRHS blood coarsing through his veins all the time and made one feel part of the school. My prayers and thoughts are with the family of this fine, outstanding man. I have such fond memories of him during my High School years, and was grateful we were fortunate enough to have such a good man helping guide us through those years. This was a great leader, non-judgmental, patient but not to a fault, funny, liked kids a lot, and gave us all a reason to sing happy birthday to someone during lunch.Mr. Mathews never tired of being who his students wanted him to be, and often found himself being better than he sat out to be. While I was there, he never forgot my name, took his basketball team to the city finals, and made me feel at home in school. You were something special, Mr. Mathews. I'll miss you.

How sad to hear of Bob's passing.  When I was 10, he took a group of people from our neighborhood in Staten Island (Mariner's Harbor)to Ebbetts Field in Brooklny to see the Brooklyn Dodgers.  I can't believe that he passed away barely a month and change after attending our 50th class reunion. We mourn his passing but celebrate his life.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Matthews passing. I remember his as a great gym teacher and later post graduation as a champion of the Alumni Association, which I worked to help establish along with a number of others. My thoughts and prayers to the family. He will be missed.

I am so sorry to learn about "Matty's" passing away. He was my Sunday School teacher in the 9th and 10th grade, way back when, and always managed to keep we teenagers interest. My deepest sympathies to the family.

He was a great guy, a mentor as a teacher, and one who looked for the best in the kids in PRHS...God be with his family.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Mathews' passing. He was an icon, and well-loved at Port Richmond High School. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

My Heart goes out to the Robert Mathews Family. I have wonderful memories of Mr. Mathews, as we called him at Port Richmond High School. He was well liked and well respected, a role model for the students. When I look through my Port Richmond High School Graduation book, Class of 1965. Mr. Mathews will always stand out. I will miss seeing and speaking to him at the King's Arms Diner on Forest Avenue, where he would often dine around evening dinner time, sitting and enjoying his meals. People that knew him as well as the staff would greet him and say, "good evening Mr. Mathews." He would look with a smile and greet them back with, "good evening. In one of our conversations, I asked him if he was a service veteran, he said he was,I thanked him for his service. Mr. Mathews Spirit will always live on in all the hearts he touched with the love and devotion he shared with the world as an Exceptional Humanitarian. You will always be a bright and shining star looking down upon us from the heavens.

I just heard of the sad news of the passing of Mr. Mathews. He was a truly remarkable man who I will always look up to and admired. He was a great teacher and friend of my family. He often took my parents to baseball games during the summer when he followed our American Legion Team which had numerous Port Richmond athletes.I will truly miss him watching basketball games baseball games on Staten Island. I will miss his christmas card every year for the past 20 years. A true gentleman always and always will be Mr. Mathews no matter how old I get he will always be remembered and respected. A true loss to all of Staten Island. My prayers our with you and your family.

Bob was a great SI guy. He always went out of his way to say hello and loved to have a laugh. Remembering Bob brings back many great memories.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Mr. Matthews' passing. Bob was one of a handful of teachers at Port Richmond who truly cared about his students and, as a coach, his players.  For decades after my graduating (1965) Bob and I had many nice and often funny conversations. The nickname I often called him was Wally ~ a somewhat private joke.  He will be missed....

So sad to hear of Bobs passing. I will always remember his jokes at our Wedneday morning coffee hour after Mass. Also, the wonderful job he did when he was in charge of our Vacation Bible School at Ascension. He was a wonderful man and will be missed. Rose Marie T

So sad to hear of Mr. Matthews passing.  He was a standout teacher at Port Richmond High School.  His basketball coaching was stellar as well. More recently I would see him at many St Peters basketball games and at times, football as well.  He will be missed.
