Ruth Ann Elder, 75, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away March 11, 2020 after a long illness. She will forever be remembered for her infectious laughter and sense of humor.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, to the late William and Helen Lake, Ruth moved to Staten Island with her husband and three sons in 1974 to the same house she lived to this day. She worked at New Dorp High School in the program office for over 30 years. Ruth touched the lives of many students who volunteered in the office and continued friendships into their adulthood. Even in her neighborhood, she was always available for a cup of tea and a game of chess for those who needed extra care.

Ruth enjoyed cooking and baking her loved ones favorite dishes, the Yankees, and Elvis Presley. She loved to travel with her husband around the world, especially to Scotland and London, England. Ruth enjoyed taking her granddaughters on special trips, including a trip to Disney World with each one.

Ruth is preceded in death by her beloved son, Michael. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, George; her son Bobby and his wife Jennifer; her granddaughters Jessica Lynn (Jesse), Kayla Rose, Megan Elizabeth and Alexandra Ruth; and her son Gary, his wife Jennifer, and his stepdaughters Sydney and Meghan.

This is my second entry. I don’t know what happened. Ruthie, as I have told you many times, you are the strongest, bravest and smartest person I ever knew. I never had a surprise to tell you, whether I was getting engaged, or I was pregnant. I would say, guess what, and boom, you blurted it out. I don’t know. Going to sure miss your ear to talk to, and great advice you had for me. I’ll do my best to look after my brother for you. Your boys will be there for him. The “Elder family” will be lost without you, so, please you, Michael, everyone up in heaven look after them and us as well. Love you deeply.

My dear Ruth. I am one of the many students who cherished your love for teaching, aiding and just listening. The moment you heard my name, you welcomed me with warm hugs and smiles. Hearing you held my photo in your office ‘till your retiring years has melted my heart. I will forever miss you and continue to cherish our years together in New Dorp. You were one of the few women I purposely tried to stay in touch with because you’ve touched my heart. With all my love and prayers, I’m wishing you continued peace, comfort and I hope your pain free. ‘Till we meet again my Shop-rite boss xoxo Ruth P.

I am certain that Ruthie is organizing all the Elvis fans in heaven, getting ready for a party.
Working with Ruth was always an adventure, no matter what challenges there were scheduling courses, she found the humor and you could hear that laugh as you walked down the hall.
She was a fine, hard working and caring woman, I know she will be sorely missed by friends and family. We were all touched by her good spirit and we're lucky to have had the privilege of knowing her, working along side of her and most of all laughing with her.
Ruthie, please say Hi to Eva for me
Rest in sweet peace
As Always, Angela

Ruthie was the best. She could talk sports, politics, the economy - anything. She was enthusiastic, energetic and full of life. I loved my sister-in-law!

30 years is a long time to have known Ruth and down to the last time I saw her, she had an infectious laugh and the ability to say "i told you so" in a humorous way. Even over the last couple of years when her health would be a battle, she kept her sense of humor and committment to her family to be their rock!
Her body was tired not her mind and she is already up in heaven telling all the Jets fans that the Giants are #1 team in the world and jet fans dont belong in her heaven. All kidding aside, as sad as I am to see you go, you are now at peace and with your Michael, your brother and parents. We got a great team up there watching over us! Xoxo Ruth until we meet again.
