Sylvester Lee, affectionately known as Duke, passed away on May 23, 2025, at the age of 72. A longtime resident of Staten Island, New York, Duke was born on June 12, 1952, in Brooklyn, NY, and moved to Staten Island in the 1960s when his parents, John and Betty Lee, settled there with their family.
Duke grew up on Staten Island and graduated from McKee High School. Early in his career, he worked in private sanitation before joining the New York City Department of Sanitation, where he proudly served until his retirement.
Never one to be confined to a single path, Duke was also the proud owner of an animal talent agency that supplied exotic animals for film and photography. His unique line of work brought him into contact with countless celebrities, adding a rich tapestry of experiences to his already vibrant life.
Duke was a man of many passions. He studied karate and was a gifted musician who played percussion and guitar. He was a member of a jazz band and also wrote and performed his own music. His creativity and dedication to his craft were matched only by the warmth and wisdom he shared with those lucky enough to know him personally.
To know Duke was to be inspired. He was a magnetic presence—kind, funny, talented, and real. He will be missed by many and hated by none.
He is survived by his brothers Derrick and Kenny, his sister Belinda, his sons Steven and Chris, his daughter-in-law Haysha, and his beloved grandchildren Donte, Javon, and Makylah, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on June 29, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Casey Funeral Home, located at 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314.
Duke leaves behind a legacy of love, music, and unforgettable memories. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
