Walter attended P.S. 45 in West Brighton and Curtis High School before earning a degree from Wagner College on the GI Bill. His commitment to service was evident during his time in the Army from 1943 to 1946, where he was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He saw active duty on New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, and Okinawa, finishing his service in Korea post the surrender of the Japanese.
After graduating from Wager College, Walter embarked on a career in the insurance industry. In 1957, he took over the family locksmith business after the passing of his father-in-law, Joseph Minkel. He and his wife, Emma, whom he was married to for 63 years, successfully ran the business until their retirement in 2001. People in the community have fond memories of his walking to work every day for many years.
Walter was a lifelong fan of football, having played during his high school and college years. He enjoyed watching the Giants and Wagner College teams play. He also cherished his nightly scotch while watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, attributing his longevity to this ritual. Walter loved spending time at Long Beach Island and in Upstate New York, especially when accompanied by family dogs. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports like hockey, baseball, concerts and Boy scout events.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Emma Minkel Stiering, sister Lois Berge, and son-in-law Thomas Coakley, Walter's loving spirit is carried on by his children Debra Fibikar, Christine Coakley, and Walter J. Stiering. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Matt, Dani, Sean, Paige, Ryan, and Devon, as well as his great-grandchild August, with another great-grandson expected in November.
A memorial service will be held at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Avenue, on Thursday, September 19, 2024, from 5 PM to 9 PM. His final resting place will be St. Peter’s cemetery.
