William James Slaven Sr., 74, a lifelong Staten Island resident and devoted family man, passed away Friday, November 16, 2018. Before marrying the love of his life, the man lovingly called "Billy" served four years in the Navy as an assault boat coxswain during the Viet Nam war. He was honorably discharged in 1964. When he met Doreen Ann Barback, he said he knew she was "the one." The self-proclaimed "Recycled Teenagers" shared 32 years of bliss together. Together hey raised four children, daughters Karen Patricia and Kathleen Ann, and sons William James Jr. and Heath Warren.
Billy was a past commander and lifelong member of the Cichon Post in Port Richmond. He kept up with the Post's membership and when needed during a Post function, would take on the role of bar steward while keeping the merriment going. Billy loved to go fishing in his boat, launching from the Tottenville area and regularly sharing his catch with neighbors and friends. His frequent trips to Atlantic City casinos and his two visits to the Dominican Republic were among his favorite topics of conversation. He also loved the Yankees.
He is survived by his four children and their spouses, sons-in-law Winfield Rand and John Camiolo; daughters-in-law Angela Slaven and Kristine Slaven; sister Marjorie Williams, and brother James and his wife Michelle Slaven; his beloved 16 grandchildren and much-adored 9 great-grandchildren.
