Rick was born in Columbus, Ohio, and attended high school in Spartanburg, SC. He enjoyed visiting relatives in Bulloch County throughout his childhood. After military service in the Air Force following high school, Rick returned to Statesboro and attended Georgia Southern where he was active in the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. After college, Rick worked at King Finishing where he met and married his wife Shari, thereby gaining his first two daughters Tasha Nesbitt and Tava Glisson. Two years later, the family became five with the birth of Tara Barr.
After a thirteen year career at King, Rick became Enterprise Director at First District RESA. There, he invested twenty-one years helping public school systems in seventeen counties save taxpayers' money through cooperative bulk purchasing. Rick also worked thirty-one years at H & R Block, doing income tax preparation where many co-workers and clients became good friends.
Rick always loved the out of doors. He earned his Eagle Scout rank as a teen, and loved to fish and hunt. He was an athlete who excelled at baseball, basketball, bowling and golf as a young man. Rick was a life time golfer, who won both local and area tournament championships. He also served as treasurer and president for the Men's Golf Association at his home clubs of Eagle Creek then Smithfield Golf. Rick modeled good sportsmanship and high character for all who knew him, on or off a playing field.
Believing that only our good deeds outlive us, Rick had been an active volunteer with the Bulloch Lions' Club since 1975. He served as club president, vice president and treasurer. Rick was named Lion of the Year in 2009, and a Melvin Jones Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Services in 2010. He chaired the local Lions' Club Flag Project which has raised thousands of dollars to provide eye exams and glasses for people in need, as well as helping fund guide dogs for the blind.
With his Faith Meets Life Sunday School class at Pittman Park UMC in 1994, he helped raise money to fund the original Ogeechee Area Hospice. He also raised money for and helped to construct the very first Habitat for Humanity house in 1991. Twenty years later, he helped construct House #41 in 2011, and was awarded Habitat's Golden Hammer Award.
Rick served as Alumni Advisor for Delta Tau Delta and was recognized for his help in their achieving Re-colonization at GSU in 2007. During his tenure, the local chapter was twice awarded national recognition with a Hugh Shields Chapter Award of Excellence. The Southern Division awarded him special recognition of excellence as Outstanding Chapter Advisor in 2009. He was greatly touched in his last days by tributes received from dozens of fraternity brothers, testifying to his influence on them.
Always willing to invest himself in his home community, Rick served on the Board of CORE Credit Union, as a Corporate Campaign Leader for United Way of Bulloch County, a Special Events Cook for Food Bank and on the Statesboro City Planning Commission.
