

Mrs. Dorothy Burch Roebuck, age 89, died Friday at Heritage Inn Health & Rehab Center. She was a native of Mt. Vernon, Georgia and was the daughter of the late Everett E. and Dorothy Hughes Burch. Her education was obtained from Brewton Parker High School, Brewton Parker College and Georgia Southern College. She was employed by the Mt. Vernon Post Office for fourteen years. She retired from teaching Business Education at Effingham County High School, Springfield, and Southeast Bulloch High School. Mrs. Roebuck was active in many church and civic organizations. She was a member of the Brooklet United Methodist Church where she taught an adult Sunday school class for over forty years, held many offices in the United Methodist Women’s organization, first chairman of the Council of Ministries, and held numerous offices in the church. She was Georgia Business Educator of the year in 1963 and 1983; District I Business Educator of the year in 1974 and 1982; Georgia Business Educator Recognition of Excellence 1985; Chairperson of the Community Development Association for twenty years, during which time the Brooklet Peanut Festival began. She was President of the Bulloch Historical Society for ten years and was active in the Bulloch Retired Educators Association having prepared the yearbook for over twenty five years and has been an officer for many years, President of the Keen-Age Club since 1994, active in Alumni affairs of Brewton-Parker College and was Volunteer of the year in 1998, and was President of the Half-Century Club for four years, the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award in 1991 and the Lifetime Achievement in 2003.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Roebuck and her son, Jimmy Roebuck.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Sherrill Taylor, Curtis Burch, Jr., Dick Burch, Jakie Burch, Ricky Burch, Hollis Burch, Jr., Gloria Murphy, Billie Jean Fortner, Linda Greever, and several others.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 20, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home in Statesboro, Ga.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Brooklet United Methodist Church with Rev. Wes Moye and Rev. Warren Williams officiating.
Burial will be in the Brooklet City Cemetery.
