Isaac Newton Bunce, 90, died April 6, 2012 at his home. This Bulloch County native grew up in family that had maintained an unbroken line of farmers since their immigration from Germany in 1751. He lived in a house built by his great-father until he was nine when his father purchased a farm. During his youth, he attended the Emit Grove Baptist and the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Churches. He graduated from the Laboratory School of Ga. Teacher’s College in 1938 and attended Georgia Teacher’s College until his studies were interrupted by World War II. He enlisted in the army and served his country until the end of the war. In 1945, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology graduating with a B.S. in Textile Chemistry in 1948. From 1948-1950 he worked as the Chief Financial Officer for the Turner E. Smith Publishing Company in Atlanta. He returned to Bulloch County to assist his parents with the family farm and made farming his career from 1950-1990: he raised livestock, corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, and peanuts. He fed 1000-1200 cattle for 25 years and brought innovative cattle feeding techniques from the Midwest to Bulloch County. On December 31, 1955, he married Nona Caroline Quinn. They were members of the First United Methodist Church and of the Brunson-Simmons Sunday School Class. He served as President of the Denmark chapter of the Bulloch Co. Farm Bureau, President of the Bulloch Co. Livestock Association during the completion of the fairground building and was a member of the Salzburger and Statesboro Historical Societies. Always a lover of historic preservation, in 1981 he restored a house built in 1887 by Alan Hagan. This home, Provenance, was placed on tour by the Statesboro Historical Society to celebrate Georgia’s 250th anniversary. After he retired, he built several pieces of furniture for his children. He was known for honesty, hard work, a dry sense of humor, his enjoyment of the beauties of nature, and his love for his family. Late in his life, he opened his heart to Jesus Christ, found peace with God, and was looking forward to being reunited with his beloved wife, Nona.
Survivors include his son, Augustine Arthur Bunce; his daughter, Caroline Sophia Bunce; his nephew, Paul Cone Bunce and his wife Ann, his niece, Frances Bunce Dielmann; his great niece, Dr. Antonia Bunce and her husband Nathan Bowen, his great nephew, Christopher Dielmann, and great-great nephews, Evan and William Bowen, his friends and caregivers Elizabeth Laughlin, Donna Beegle, Patricia Hodges, Brenda Brown, and Gwen Littles.
