

Jean was born in Sharon, PA to Charles Barrett and Sue Elizabeth Dougherty Black and graduated from DuBois High School in Dubois, PA. She was also a graduate of Spencer Hospital School of Nursing in Meadville, PA and did her post graduate work at Vanderbilt University. Jean moved to Statesboro in 1946 and was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church; the Georgia Nurse’s Association; the American Nurse’s Association; the Georgia Association of Physician’s Assistants, where she had served as president, and the American Academy of Physician’s Assistants. Jean received the Dean Day Smith Service to Mankind Award and was a Paul Harris Fellow and had been named in the Who’s Who of American Women; Who’s Who in Nursing; Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in America.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Donald Ashley Coleman.
Mrs. Coleman is survived by her daughter, Sue Ann Lopez and her husband, John of Levelland, TX; son Don Ashley Coleman and his wife, Denise of Clyde, NC; brother, Charles E. Black of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; four grandchildren, Stephen Lynn of Brownwood, TX; Brian Lynn of Louisville, KY; Matt Lynn of Alpine, TX and Captain Beth Coleman, U.S. Air Force, Mountain Home, Idaho; 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, October 19th in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held 1:30 PM Friday, October 20th in St. Matthew’s Catholic Church with Reverend Douglas K. Clark officiating.
Burial will follow in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
