Dr. John Chesley Adams, Jr., age 83, died Saturday evening at the Ogeechee Area Hospice after a recent illness. He was born in Charlton County, but lived most of his life in Statesboro, GA. Dr. Adams got his B.S. Degree in 1959 and his Master’s Degree in 1962 from Ga. Southern College. He received his Doctorate Degree from Florida State University in 1965. He taught school at Savannah State College, Augusta College, University of Georgia, Brunswick College, and Florida State University. He was the owner of Dr. John C. Adams, Jr., P.C. Applied Psychology, serving Statesboro and surrounding areas for many years. Dr. Adams also served on multiple State and local panels involving psychology throughout the State of Georgia; was a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary; a Lieutenant Colonel Aide De Camp, Governor’s Staff with Governors Joe Frank Harris, Zell Miller, Roy Barnes and Sonny Perdue. Dr. Adams served on the Ogeechee Community Wellness Council, National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association, World Federation for Mental Health, Inc., Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Trustees GSU Foundation, was a member of the GSU 1906 Society, and was on the board of the Governor’s Office of the Child Advocate. He was a member of the Statesboro First United Methodist Church and a Veteran of the US Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Sharon Elizabeth Stubbs Adams; his mother and father John C. and Sarah Roberts Adams, Sr.; and brother, Thomas Roberts Adams.
He is survived by one daughter and son in law, Susan Elisabeth Adams Sisson (Lew), Walnut Creek, CA; three sons and two daughters in law, John Chesley Adams, III. of Athens, GA; Christian Bridges Adams (Carrie) of Statesboro, GA; and Thomas Everett Adams (Meg), Powder Springs, GA; six granddaughters and one grandson; sisters-in-law, Gwen Stubbs, of Greenville, SC and Harriette Cone Adams of Statesboro. He was loved and supported by Melchor Hines, of Statesboro.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home from 5-7 pm.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 2:00pm at the Statesboro First United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Bruce H. Allen, assisted by Rev. Jimmy Cason.
Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
Active Pallbearers will be Jim Davis, Geoffrey Thompson, Ricky Nessmith, Gary Wilhelm, Brad Swartz, and Everett Stubbs.
