Kathy had a great love for things of the mind—for books, art, and music—and for most anything that was purple, and she approached life with a zestful and indefatigable combination of passion and pragmatism. She first met her husband, Gregory William Harwood, while they were serving church missions in Italy; they later married while they were graduate students at NYU and have been happily married for 33 years.
She held a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from New York University and, at one time or another, taught every grade from Kindergarten through college. In 2002, she became the founding Director of the Charter Conservatory for Liberal Arts & Technology, the first state charter school in Georgia, and in 2011 received the “Shoot for the Moon Award” awarded by the Georgia Charter School Association for Distinguished Service to Charter Schools. Kathy was a champion of women and of adolescents, whose sometime quirky behavior she found endearing.
Kathy is survived by her husband Greg, her children Martin and Elizabeth, a daughter-in-law, Miriam, and two beloved grandchildren, Eliza and William.
