Michael Barrett Humphrey died at his home in Statesboro, GA on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018 at the age of 74. He was a veteran of the United States Army, a graduate of Brewton Parker College, a cancer survivor, and a proud supporter of and contributor to the performing arts community in Statesboro. He was born on April 4, 1944, in Vidalia, Ga. He was a graduate of Vidalia High School, and enlisted in the US Army in 1962. After an honorable discharge in 1965 he attended Brewton Parker College where he earned an associate degree in Music in 1968. After moving to Statesboro in 1972, he worked for Statesboro Telephone Company for forty years until his retirement. An accomplished musician, Michael loved to sing and play low-brass instruments, and contributed his talents to many church choirs, community choirs, and community bands in the Statesboro area throughout his life. He also enjoyed acting on the stage and appeared in numerous local productions, including On Golden Pond, A Life Done Right: The Living Legacy of Erk Russell, and The Sound of Music. Michael was preceded in death by his father and mother, Leigh Barrett and Agnes Powell Humphrey.
He is survived by two brothers, a sister-in-law, and a brother-in-law, William Humphrey (Becky) of Milledgeville, GA. and Richard Humphrey (Jim Rohrer) of Indianapolis, IN; three children, Samantha Klein (Andrew) of St. Paul, MN, Tim Humphrey (Lori) of Statesboro, Ga., and Ben Humphrey (Sarah) of Duluth, Ga.; two granddaughters, Lyra Klein and Fontana Humphrey, and two grandsons, Hannes Klein and Tristan Humphrey. He is also survived by his former wife, Cynthia Cavey of Pasadena, MD.
A gathering of friends and family will be held Friday, December 28th from 6-8 p.m. at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 29th at 11 a.m. at Pittman Park United Methodist Church with Elder Billy Collins officiating.
Pallbearers are William Humphrey, Richard Humphrey, Samantha Humphrey Klein, Tim Humphrey, Ben Humphrey, and Randy Herth. Honorary pallbearers are the BPC Bashers.
