Sara was born in Royston and was raised in Lavonia. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950, with a degree in Home Economics and was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She worked at Rich’s Department Store in Atlanta in the early 1950’s and later moved to Milledgeville, where she lived for 49 years before moving to Statesboro in 2004. She loved her second home on Fripp Island, SC where she enjoyed the beach and fishing for over 18 years. After selling her home on Fripp Island, she recently purchased a second home on St. Simons Island that she loved and enjoyed decorating. Sara was a member of Statesboro First Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by her parents, Winiford M. and Eleanor C. McMurry.
Sara is survived by her husband of 62 years, William R. “Bill” Barnes, Statesboro; daughter, Beverly Barnes Johnson, Brooklet; son, William R. Barnes, Jr., Atlanta; brother and his wife, Robert M and Maxine McMurry, Lavonia; sister-in-law and her husband, Patricia B. and Lt. Col. Robert C. Hughes, US Air Force, Ret., Florida; niece, Nancy M. Watson, Atlanta; nephew, Russell McMurry, Braselton; grandchildren, Maggie Johnson, Statesboro; Ashley Barnes, Atlanta and Brett Johnson, Ohio; 1 great grandchild, Andy Johnson.
Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, October 17 in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
Graveside funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 18 in Memory Hill Cemetery in Milledgeville with the Reverend Dan Lewis officiating.
