Alice Macon Stewart

Alice Macon Stegall Stewart, 87, of Stony Point, passed away at her home on July 31, 2025. A native of Warren Co., NC, she was born on December 6, 1937 to the late Milton Macon and Alice Holt Ball Stegall and was raised in Portsmouth, VA. Alice was a longtime resident of western Iredell County. Alice was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, but was probably best known for her role of being the first female Republican to be elected to the Iredell County Board of Commissioners beginning in 1984 and winning re-election multiple times following that victory. She served on numerous committees, local and state boards, but was the most proud of being the longest serving member on the Social Services Board. Alice was a 1955 graduate of Craddock High School in Portsmouth, VA. She was married to the late Vestal Carol Stewart who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Diane Welch and Linda Evans. Alice was civically minded and was a member of the West Iredell Ruritan Club, Statesville's Women's Club, a former officer in the Iredell County GOP, a Trustee for Mitchell Community College and the Republican Women's Club.

Alice is survived by her son Scott Wayne Stewart (Laura) of Portsmouth, Virginia; by her daughter Lisa Lynn Stewart Crater (Dexter Owen Crater) of Salisbury, NC; sisters Doris Hamilton and Catherine Lee, both of Portsmouth, VA; and by two grandchildren, Ethan York Crater (Kristi) of China Grove, NC and Raleigh Aaron Crater of Salisbury. A number of nieces and nephews survive her.

A funeral celebrating the life of Alice Stewart will be held in the Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home on Friday, August 8, 2025 at 1:00 PM with the Rev. Bill Troutman officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM, prior to the service and the interment will follow the service at Union Cemetery at Marvin Global Methodist Church in Stony Point.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association or to the Wounded Warrior Project. These three organizations were significant to Alice and a donation in her memory would be a blessing to those who are served by them.

Please remember to provide support and comfort to Alice's children who provided continuous care for her as the years went on and her needs became greater. Service to others was a trait that was instilled in her children and for that, we are grateful.
