

Alice was born in Winston-Salem, NC on August 29, 1925. Her family moved to Baltimore, Maryland when she was two years old and later moved back to the family farm in Yadkin County. She graduated from West Yadkin High School. She worked at Carbon Plant during World War II, where they made parts for bombs. Alice moved to various places with her husband, Marius Lee Kinder, as his work required, including Memphis, TN, Glen Rock, NJ, various cities in Florida and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. They maintained Charlotte as their home base but moved to Lake Norman in the early 60s, where she learned to water ski. Alice was an excellent seamstress and wove beautiful baskets.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was Worthy Matron twice and also the Grand Representative to Puerto Rico.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Harvey A. and Vera Cain Wood, brothers Charles and Harvey Wood, sisters, June W. Kimbrough Blunk and Vera Lou Hix. Also preceding her in death are her husbands, Marius Lee Kinder and Zeddie C. VanHoy.
After Mr. Kinder died in 1970, she worked at Draymore Mfg. in Mooresville. She was a widow for 17 years before she married Zeddie C. VanHoy and moved to his farm in Union Grove. She was a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Roy Johnston, five granddaughters, Shannon McBride (Ty), Allison Stawski (Jim), Margaret Rhodes (Wil), all of Charlotte, Laura Cudd (Gordon) of Lynchburg, VA, and Kathryn Cranford of Mebane. Her sister, Dot Wagoner of Hamptonville is left to cherish her memory along with eleven great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews, also, stepdaughters, Ann Loftis (Mike) of Union Grove, Jane Hayes (David) of Union Grove and three step-grandsons, Benjamin Loftis (Amanda), Taylor Loftis (Maureen), Van Loftis (Lauren), and five step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville. A funeral service will follow, at 11:00 AM, in the Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of the Piedmont; 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, North Carolina 27262.
