Carolyn Mattie Robinson McDaniel, 78, was born December 30, 1947 in Elizabethton, Tennessee to Mose Paul Robinson and Pauline Proffitt Robinson, and passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026 at her home in Cleveland, North Carolina. In the quiet space between those dates lived a woman shaped by endurance and love—someone who met life head-on, carried what needed carrying, and still found ways to make a home feel warm and steady.
From her earliest years, Carolyn’s resilience showed itself in the way she helped raise her siblings during their formative years. She learned young how to be strong for others, how to keep going when the days were long, and how to offer care not as a performance, but as a way of living.
Carolyn was a hard worker and a thoughtful caregiver from the day she was born. That devotion to doing what needed to be done—patiently, faithfully, and with a watchful heart—became a defining thread in her life, seen in the countless ordinary moments that, stitched together, become a legacy.
She was married to her beloved husband, Dewey Campbell McDaniel, for 53 years, until he passed away in 2017. Carolyn dearly loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; family meant everything to her. Her love was not small or delicate—it was steadfast, protective, and present, the kind that holds on through every season.
Carolyn was considered to be the best biscuit maker and cornbread baker anywhere around, and those gifts were more than recipes—they were comfort, welcome, and a familiar kind of joy shared at the table. Always full of energy, she kept her hands busy and her mind engaged, working on many projects that included making lamps, doing needlepoint, and working with stained glass—turning simple materials into something useful, something beautiful, something that lasted.
Carolyn was a spitfire—pound for pound, the toughest woman you’d ever meet. Her strength was not loud for the sake of being heard; it was the steady kind that stands up, shows up, and keeps going. In her, resilience was not a slogan, but a lived truth. Not only a spitfire, she was exceptionally funny and quick-witted--she could absolutely make you laugh until you cried.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Campbell McDaniel; her father, Mose Paul Robinson; her mother, Pauline Proffitt Robinson; her son, Dewey Dee McDaniel; her brothers, Randy and Gary; and her sisters, Lena, Darlene, and Donna.
She is survived by her daughter, Jill McDaniel Cline (Michael) of Atlantic, North Carolina; her sisters, Brenda, Sandra, Mozetta, Frances, Paulette, and Lisa, all of Elizabethton, Tennessee; her granddaughters, Caitlyn (Daniel) and Cara of Cleveland, North Carolina, and Casey (Dustin) of Salisbury, North Carolina; and her great-grandchildren, Asher, Beckett, and Everly.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on May 19, 2026, at Old Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cleveland, North Carolina where she will be laid to rest.
