Mrs. Colene Gray Hurt, of Statesville, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Autumn Care of Statesville. Born September 5, 1933 in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Eugene Gray and Rachel Jenkins Gray. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Doncaster, sisters: Lois Ervin, Inez Tomlin, Laverne Clanton and Marie Kimberlin and brothers: Charles Neil Gray and Leon Gray. Surviving are her husband, John along with a daughter, Cindy McNamee, grandchildren: Erin Giles (George), Robert, Michael and Daniel McNamee, great grandsons: Lucas McNamee and Cormac Giles. Also surviving are brothers: Reid Gray (Peggy) and Kenneth Gray (Becky) and sisters: Eloise Wilson, Philis Joyner (Henry) and Shirley Goodman(John), son-in-law, Glenn Doncaster, and step grand daughteers, Erinn and Emily Doncaster. Colene and John were married on March 23, 1957. John's work wook them to West Virginia where Colene was a stay at home mom to raise their two daughters. After the girls finished high school, Colene went back to work as the office manager for an insurance agency until her retirement. After John retired they returned to the Statesville area in 1997. At that time they became members of the Western Ave. Baptist Church where Colene was a member of the Lydia Sunday School Class. For John, Colene was the perfect wife. For Cindy and Linda, Colene was the perfect mother. Having been raised in a large family, Colene was a very kind, patient, and understanding person. She will also be remembered by her beautiful handicraft work - the afghans she crocheted, the quilting work, and the many Christmas ornaments she enjoyed making. Services celebrating her life will be conducted at Western Ave. Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday with Dr. Skip Cartin officiating. Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 until 2:00 Saturday prior to the service. Condolences may be sent online to the family to www.bunchjohnsonfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County 2347 Simonton Rd. Statesville, N.C. 28625 or to the Elder Center 248 Davie Ave. Statesville, N.C. 28677. Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
