David Rolston Miles, 86, of Statesville, North Carolina, died on Thursday, September 3, 2026. He was born in Mount Kisco, New York, on June 6, 1940 to the late Irving Beardsley Miles and Alice Elizabeth White Miles .
David served in the US Army and went on to teach fourth grade and fifth grade for 32 years. A lover of history and photography, and especially working on his ancestry David found lasting fascination in the stories and images that connect generations.
He regularly vacationed at the his two favorite places, the Red Lion Inn in Massachusetts and Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. He also took simple joy in feeding birds and photographing them.
An antique car enthusiast, David had a remarkable eye and could easily identify the make and model of a car even from a distance. But above all, he will be remembered by his family as a kind and gentle man.
David was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marsha Morrison Miles; his son, Shawn David Miles (Stephanie) of Utah; his daughter, Heather Jean McDarby (Barry) of New Hampshire; and his grandchildren, Abby Connie Miles, William Marshall Miles, Patrick Ian Miles, Zachary Miles McDarby, and Samantha Mae Miles.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Chapel at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Bill Troutman officiating.
