Dorothy Louise Stroud Steelman

STATESVILLE- Mrs. Dorothy Steelman, 90, went home to be with the Lord on December 31, 2018. She passed away peacefully at Autumn Care of Statesville.

Born on June 9, 1928 in Iredell County, she was the daughter to the late Earl and Bessie York Stroud. Mrs. Steelman graduated from Cool Spring High School. She worked various jobs until her husband established Steelman Throw Rug Mill in their basement in 1965. She worked there approximately 25 years till textile rugs became obsolete. In 1989 she became known as Mamaw Dot. She helped with both of her grandsons Travis and Casey and enjoyed taking them places. Both boys were well known at Bojangles, since this was her favorite place to eat. When her husband’s health declined he was admitted to the W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center of Salisbury NC and she became a volunteer there for several years until her husband’s death in May of 1997. She later worked / volunteered at Journey’s of Statesville while her mother Bessie was a resident there. Later she enjoyed full retirement and more Bojangles visits. She was a dedicated member of Union Chapel Baptist Church until her decline in health and driving abilities. In 2013 she became a resident of Journey’s of Statesville where she enjoyed all activities and especially bingo.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, of 49 years, Max Reavis Steelman and younger brother, Ruben Stroud.

Left to cherish her loving memory is her daughter, Melissa (Randy) Holland; grandchildren, Travis (Tanesha) Holland and Casey (Maria) Holland; great-grandchildren, Liam and Jackson Holland and Sophia and Xavier Holland; sister, Colene Clarke and sister-in-law, Evelyn Stroud and many other loving nieces & nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 12pm at Union Chapel Baptist Church, 213 Gays Chapel Road, Statesville, NC 28625 with Rev. William Weese officiating. The burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11am-12pm prior to the service at the church.
