

She was born February 1, 1920, in Stanley, Virginia, and was the daughter of the late Clyde Grover and Valley Virginia Bushong Koontz. She was a lifelong Lutheran. She worked in retail store in the Pentagon and worked with Melpar in Fairfax, Virginia, where she helped manufacture parts for the Apollo Space Program and moon missions. Fulfilling her passion to help people, she got her CNA certification at a late age and served as a private duty CNA until the age of 81. She loved being outdoors and was passionate about her yard and flower gardens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Edward Howerton; two sisters, Jeanette Short and Louise Kite; and two brothers, Randolph Koontz and Richard Koontz.
She is survived by a daughter, Martha “Marty” H. Driggers of Statesville; a son, David K. Howerton of Wingate, NC; five grandchildren, Dana S. Driggers of Statesville, Carla D. (Jody) Gaither of Harmony, Elizabeth (Leigh) Kees and Edith (Jonathan) Mills both of Hagerstown, MD, and Sarah Marie Howerton of Colorado Springs, CO; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Isaac (Beth) Koontz of Richmond, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 12:30 PM Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market, Virginia. Burial will follow at Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Market.
