Elsie Irene Davis

Mrs. Elsie Davis, 89, passed away on April 20th after a brief illness. She was wife of the late Rev. Wendell G. Davis and is remembered as a devoted pastor’s wife, kind Mother, and loving friend during their 55 years of church ministry.

Elsie was born in Salisbury, N.C., and was educated at Mars Hill College. After her marriage to Wendell in 1942, they began ministry at Grundy Baptist Church, Grundy, VA.(1942-1945). Later ministries included College Avenue Baptist Church, Bluefield, WV (1945-1948), Western Avenue Baptist Church, Statesville (1948-1959), Midwood Baptist Church, Charlotte (1959-1981), and Fairview Baptist Church, Statesville (1981-1984).

She was active in the Women’s Missionary Society and served as a local and state officer with Christian Women’s Club. She also served as President of the North Carolina State Pastor’s Wives Association. For the past five years she was a resident at Statesville Place

Surviving children are Tom Davis and wife Penny of Elon, Bonnie Davis Hanvey of Hickory, and Ed Davis and wife Donna of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Irene Davis. She enjoyed her six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at Western Avenue Baptist Church, Statesville, on Saturday April 23, 2011 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 to 2:00 PM prior to the service. Interment will be at Enon Baptist Church in Salisbury.
