

Gary served his country for 22 years in the US Navy, eventually retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. While in the Navy he was a member of the first graduating class of Physician Assistants. He also played Navy volleyball and spent time stationed with the US Marine Corps. He continued working as a PA after his naval career until he retired in 2020.
He was a member of the Wilderness Medical Society and of Kennesaw Lodge #33 in Georgia. Gary was an avid runner until he was no longer able to due to a disability.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Michael Butts and Robert Butts; sister, Susan Butts; and granddaughter, Kari Walvatne.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Butts; daughters, Sheri Butts and Beverly Lynn Butts; grandchildren, Amanda Butts, Heather Walvatne, J.P. Johnson, and Kenneth Walvatne; great-grandchildren, Michael, Haley, Jason, Scarlett, and Leon Paul Butts.
A graveside service with military honors for Gary will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Committal Shelter at the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex.
