

He was born June 9, 1930, in Iredell County, and was a son of the late Warren Seth and Mabel Anna Norris Martin. He was one of seven children. One brother, James Francis Martin, preceded him in death while in service to his country in 1961.
Mr. Martin was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church. He has served the church as a deacon, elder, and as treasurer of the Sunday School for 19 years. On three occasions he represented the church as Clerk of the Session. He was a graduate of Harmony High School Class of 1949. In January of 1952, he served in the United States Army, 84th Engineering Division, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of the Nashville Automotive and Diesel Engineering College. In 1959 he was employed by the Iredell County School Bus Garage as a mechanic. In 1970, he was hired to teach the first automotive mechanics class for Iredell County Schools at the Vocational and Occupational Center located at the former Unity High School. The center provided career opportunities for students from North and South Iredell High Schools. In 1974, Mr. Martin was hired by Mitchell Community College as an instructor for the Automotive Technology program. When the program ended at Mitchell in the late 1980's, he returned to the work that he most enjoyed at the Iredell County School Bus Garage. At the bus garage, he held the position of shop foreman until his retirement in 1995, after 36 years of service to the State of North Carolina and the students of Iredell County.
On May 10, 1958, he married Shirley Bustle Martin who survives. Mr. Martin has two children, a daughter, Lisa Martin Miller and her husband, Kenny and a son, Randy Lee Martin all of Statesville.
Also surviving are brothers: William S. Martin and wife, Mary, and John S. Martin and wife, Kay and sisters: Mary Jo Martin Alexander, Lucille Martin Caviness, and Carol Martin Windsor and husband, Dwight. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Bobbie Martin Gross along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services celebrating Mr. Martin's life will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Harold King officiating. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. Wednesday evening at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be assembled at the home of the deceased at 123 Bostian Lake Rd. in Statesville.
