

She was born September 28, 1915, in Yadkin County and was the daughter of the late Thomas Finley and Mary Lewis Sale. She was a devoted and faithful homemaker and worked on the family tobacco farm. She was a member of Old Fashion Gospel Church in Yadkin County.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 2001 by her husband, Clyde Henry Stokes; a daughter, Jeanette (Ray) Groce; a son, James Stokes; and ten brothers and sisters.
She is survived by three daughters, Jaqueline (the late Troy) Henderson and Edna (the late Ralph) Henderson, both of Union Grove and Linda (Alton) Prevette of Windy Gap; a son, Robert (Jestine) Stokes of Hamptonville; a brother, Thomas Finley “Pete” (Pat) Sale, Jr. of Winston-Salem; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 4 step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service celebrating Gertie’s life will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with her nephew, Wayne Miller, Chaplain Sharon Snow and Edward Shoemaker officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamptonville.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home prior to the service.
