She was born September 13, 1913, in Alexander County and was the daughter of the late Thomas Boyd and Laura Austin Smith. She was a graduate of Taylorsville High School and attended Statesville Business College. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church for more than fifty years. At the church, she was a member of the Kathryn Von Bora Sunday school class, a member of WELCA Women’s Organization, worked in the junior department of Sunday school, and volunteered many years in the church kitchen. She was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross in Statesville for many years.
On November 27, 1935, she married Thomas Kenneth Abernethy who preceded her in death on August 2, 1995. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Mrs. Abernethy is survived by four sons, Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Abernethy of Virginia, Mr. & Mrs. Alan Abernethy of Asheville, Mr. & Mrs. Lynn Abernethy of Clemmons, and Mr. & Mrs. Paul Abernethy of Raleigh; a sister, Emma Yount of Hickory; six grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services celebrating Mrs. Abernethy’s life will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor John Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with Pastor Tom Corbell officiating.
The family will receive friends at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Monday.
