Helen Joyce Flynn Simmons, 75, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. Born October 2, 1951, in Marion, Florida, she entered the world in a family-built log cabin, the daughter of William David Flynn and Maude Lee Wallace Flynn, both of whom preceded her in death.
From the beginning, Helen’s life carried the steady warmth of home and the quiet strength of someone who knew how to show up for others. Again and again, she chose care as her calling—not as a title, but as a way of moving through the world with open hands and an open heart. She devoted herself to looking after people of all ages, including those with special needs, and she also cared for her niece during her formative years, offering the kind of dependable presence that becomes part of a person’s foundation.
Helen’s compassion was never loud, but it was constant. Her kindness had a practical shape—meals made, needs noticed, comfort offered without fanfare. An amazing cook and a devoted gardener, she had a gift for nurturing life, whether it was something growing in the soil or someone who simply needed to be seen and supported.
She also carried humor like a light in her pocket, ready to be shared. Hilarious and extremely sociable, Helen had a way of drawing people in and making ordinary moments feel easier, brighter, and more human. Even when she insisted she didn’t love animals, those who knew her best understood the truth: she couldn’t live without them, and her care extended naturally to every two-legged and four-legged soul that found its way into her orbit.
Helen was preceded in death by her father, William David Flynn; her mother, Maude Lee Wallace Flynn; her brothers, Franklin Delano Flynn and William Albert Flynn; and her sister, Shirley Elaine Dye.
She is survived by her daughter, Kaeleah Conlee (Brian) of Statesville, North Carolina; her granddaughter, Kaelen Dominique Conlee of Statesville, North Carolina; and her great-granddaughter, Adeline Emery Lovett of Statesville, North Carolina.
No formal services are planned at this time.
