John “J.E.” Eugene Pitts, 87, of Statesville, North Carolina passed away at his home on September 14, 2025. He was born in Boone, North Carolina on September 25, 1937, the sixth of thirteen children born to Edgar Michael and Ruby Davis Pitts.
John proudly served four years in the United States Air Force as a medic, after which he married the love of his life Judith Ann Miller. They went on to share 67 years of marriage and a lifetime full of adventures together.
A man of many skills, John worked throughout his life as a master stone mason, brick mason and carpenter. He could make something out of anything and was always fixing or building things. Known for his intelligence, integrity, and strong work ethic, he believed deeply in honesty and keeping his word. He loved hunting, fishing and gardening, and he approached every day with energy and determination.
Even in his later years John never slowed down. Whether on the roof, in the garden, on a mountain hunting mushrooms, or up a tree with his chainsaw he was never one to sit still. On the very morning of his passing he was doing what he loved - working outdoors doing what needed to get done. His strength, both physical and in his character, were unmatched.
John lived a full rich life with amazing stories, some so unbelievable they seemed like legend yet they were all true. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and hard work that will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, Michael Wayne Pitts; brothers, Robert and James Pitts; and his sisters, Christine Barbee, Louise Reid and Rachel Cowan.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Judy; daughters, Brenda Pitts Koutroulakis and Dorothy Olson; nine grandchildren; 12 great grand children; two great-great grand children; sisters, Lois Godfrey, Margaret Griffin and Trudy Howard; brothers, Clarence and Bill Pitts; a very special niece, Shelli Pitts, who loved him like her Daddy; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
A celebration of Mr. Pitts life will be held at a later date.
