

She was born May 11, 1931, in Alexandria, VA, and was the daughter of the late Lee Roy and Effie Horton Dellinger. Prior to being a devoted homemaker and mother, she worked at Paola Cotton Mill. Lorene later worked with her husband at Benfield Sanitation Services and later retired from Great Western Yamaha. She was a faithful member of Monticello Baptist Church and was a loving mother, sister and aunt who especially enjoyed sewing and cooking.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on February 15, 1998, by her husband, James Junior Benfield, whom she married on December 24, 1947; a sister, Dorothy Dellinger; and two brothers, Harold Dellinger and Donald Dellinger.
Lorene is survived by her son, Jeff Benfield, and his wife, Susan, of Statesville; three sisters, Ruby Sharpe, Nancy Shoemaker (Fred), and Brenda Grant, all of Statesville; a brother, Clarence “Joe” Dellinger (Louise) of Statesville; a sister-in-law, Georgia Dellinger of Statesville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services celebrating Lorene’s life will be held 2:00 PM Sunday at Monticello Baptist Church with the Rev. Glen Dancy and the Rev. Brian Burgess officiating. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour and burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
Terry Beckham, Doug Dellinger, Don Sharpe, Keith Lentz, Joe Dellinger, and Fred Shoemaker will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Saturday at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home and at other times will be assembled at her residence on Kentwood Circle.
