Mabel Agnes Wyer Schmalzl, 94, was born on February 6, 1932, in The Bronx, New York, and died on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. In the lives she touched, Mabel will be remembered as deeply cherished—someone whose steady presence and quiet warmth made others feel at home, and whose thoughtful ways were often expressed in the small, faithful acts that hold a family together.
Mabel retired as a Bookkeeper for A&P Grocery Stores, work that suited her careful attention and dependable nature. She carried that same steadiness into the rhythms of daily life, where her care for others was felt not in grand gestures, but in the consistent kindness of showing up, listening, and doing what needed to be done.
She was married to John Francis Schmalzl for 57 years, until he preceded her in death. Together they built a life rooted in devotion and constancy—an enduring partnership that remained at the center of her story.
Mabel’s hands were rarely still. An avid crafter, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, baking, and gardening, and she was an excellent seamstress. She also enjoyed bowling and working jigsaw puzzles—pastimes that reflected her patience, focus, and the simple pleasure she found in making, mending, and finishing what she began.
In her community, Mabel gave her time and heart with the same quiet intention. She was a member of the Ladies of the Lake in Putnam Lake, New York, very active in the Fishkill Senior Center, and devoted to her Catholic parish in New York. These were not just places she attended, but circles where her presence mattered and her care was felt.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Vincent Wyer; her mother, Katherine Petrie Wyer; and her husband, John Francis Schmalzl.
She is survived by her daughters, Donna McCann (Tom) of Statesville, North Carolina, and Denise McGinty (Jim) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; her sister, Frances Graff of Florida; her grandchildren, James McGinty (Tara), Lindsey McGinty (Matt), Diana McCann (Christian), Melissa McCann, Alison McCann, and Thomas McCann; and her great-grandsons, James Michael McGinty, Liam McGinty, Joseph McGinty, and Abel Thomas Orlando.
A funeral service will be held at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in the Chapel, 705 Davie Avenue, in Statesville, North Carolina , on October 6, 2026, at 3:00 pm with Pastor Bill Troutman officiating. Funeral Rites in New York will be announced when information is available, and will be announced by Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home, 692 US-Hwy 6, Mahopac, New York 10541.
Mabel’s final resting place will be Rose Hill Cemetery in Putnam Valley.
