Margaret Barkley Hubbard Dickens of Statesville, North Carolina, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024, at the age of 101. She was born in 1922, in Statesville, and was the daughter of the late Roger R. and Myrtle Holler Barkley.
Margaret attended Wayside and Cool Springs Schools. She worked at Warren’s Sandwiches, and also at Rental Uniform Services, from where she eventually retired. Margaret began attending St. Paul Lutheran Church at the age of 14, and had been a member for some 87 years.
In 1977, Margaret married Robert Lee “R.L.” Dickens, who preceded her in death in 2004. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel G. Hubbard, in 2006; four brothers, Phillip, Roy, Wilfred, and Tate Barkley; and two sisters, Nellie D. Williams and Helen B. Warren.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas Scott Hubbard, of Huntersville, and Stephen Barkley Hubbard, of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Erin Hubbard, Jeremy Deen, and Ronnie Deen, Jr.; three great grandchildren, Ethan, Lotus, and Madison Deen; sisters-in-law, Martha Barkley, of Statesville, and Linda Barkley of Houston, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives in the Tidewater area of Virginia, Washington state, Texas and North Carolina.
Services celebrating Margaret’s life will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Statesville. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Paul St. Clair officiating. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Troutman.
