Mary Jane Jacobs Martin, 78, of Statesville, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, August 30th. She was born June 30, 1941, in Columbus County, North Carolina, to the late Dillon & Allie Jacobs. She graduated as valedictorian from the Nakina High School class of 1960. On November 4, 1962, she married the love of her life, William Seth Martin, and moved to Winston-Salem. After a few years of marriage, they moved permanently to Statesville.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Vernon Jacobs, of Savannah, Georgia; Dewey, Dupree, and Lindbergh Jacobs, of Tabor City, North Carolina; and her three sisters, LeaRue Gaskins, Ponnell Evans, and Fostine Long, of Columbus County.

Mary was a kind, thoughtful, caring wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother who was actively involved in the lives of her family. She was also a dedicated employee of BB&T for almost 30 years and always enjoyed helping people.

After her retirement, she worked diligently in her flower and vegetable gardens and loved sharing her plants with others. She also spent many hours shopping at Goodwill with friends and meeting new people. In addition, Mary was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church for over 50 years. She cherished her church family and actively participated in many projects within the community.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Cindy Holcomb (David) and Renee Shaver, both of Olin; two granddaughters, Jessica Bunton and Sabrina Shaver; one grandson by birth, Jake Shaver; and another grandson by marriage, Ethan Bunton. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews that were devoted to their "Aunt Mary Jane".

The family will receive friends on Monday, September 2nd, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. A service to celebrate Mary's life will be held at Fairview Baptist Church on Tuesday, September 3rd, at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Scott Eanes will officiate. Renee, Cindy and Bill. You all are in my prayers. Mary was a special lady. When I went to work for the bank, she was the person that trained me. She was very patient. We worked together for years. I ran into her a while back out shopping. I hadn’t seen her for a while and we talked like it had only been a few days. She really loved all her family and I know you all will miss her terribly.

Our sweet, caring Aunt. I was her high school mascot in 1960. I still remember that day her taking me around from classroom to classroom singing songs standing on top of teachers desk. I was only 5 yrs old. Aunt Mary was so caring for her family and tried to keep us all connected. Now she is reconnecting wit her dearest friend, our Lord and catching up with all her siblings and friends that have greeted her at heavens beautiful garden gates. I can see her sweet smile walking thru all those beautiful gardens talking to them all. Always. Our love and in our hearts Aunt Mary. Fly high and we know you will keep watch over us with all our other angels.
